Company history...
In 1967, a large project to develop sorghum as a world food product was started at the Agronomy Department of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln (UNL). William Biggs was hired as part of the research team and worked on the development of basic research instruments for the project.

A quantum sensor to measure the quantity of light usable to plants for photosynthesis was developed for the project. Scientists from other laboratories around the world began requesting similar instruments, and William Biggs, co-founder, chairman, president and CEO established LI-COR in 1971 to manufacture these sensors and other products.

These instruments provide a broad spectrum of capabilities that range from the measurement of photosynthesis rates by plant physiologists and ecologists, to underwater light measurement by oceanographers and limnologists.

LI-COR introduced the LI-8100 Automated Soil CO2 Flux System in December 2003 . The LI-8100 delivers highly accurate measurements of CO2 flux with minimum alteration of the natural microclimate of the soil. The system features chambers for making both short-term survey and long-term, unattended measurements.

LI-COR introduced the Leaf Chamber Fluorometer in 2001. The Fluorometer is an accessory to company's standard setting LI-6400 Portable Photosynthesis system. The Fluorometer enables the LI-6400 to perform simultaneous measurements of fluorescence and gas exchange over the same leaf area.

LI-COR infrared CO2/H2O analyzers have rapidly become world standards in atmospheric, industrial, and oceanographic research. The innovative LI-7500, an open path CO2/H2O analyzer, was introduced in November of 1999 and the high precision LI-7000 closed path CO2/H2O analyzer was introduced in 2000.

In the early 1980s, LI-COR applied its R & D expertise to the emerging field of biotechnology by starting a collaborative project in automated DNA sequencing with the UNL School of Biological Sciences.

The first instrument, an argon laser-based DNA sequence, was successfully used at the UNL Sequencing Core Lab for many years. Development then began on a small prototype instrument that incorporated a solid-state IR laser and detector because opportunities were seen for significantly improving performance, reliability, and affordability by changing to IR technology. This new ability to attach IR fluorophores with high fluorescence yield to large biomolecules has proven to have broader applications in molecular and cellular biology that LI-COR continues to develop.

After extensive development and testing, the Model 4000 Automated DNA Infrared Sequencer was introduced in 1992. In 1993, this technology was again used in the Model 4000L Long Read IR DNA Sequencing System, which began to set world standards for long read lengths and accuracy.

LI-COR's next development for DNA sequencing and genetic analysis was the IR2 System. IR2 technology utilizes LI-COR IRDye? fluorescent dyes to expand the productivity and affordability of infrared DNA analysis while furthering superior read lengths, throughput and new applications. In 1999, the system was enhanced with the introduction of e-Sequencing? and the Global IR2 System that added new software and networking options including Internet connectivity.

Also in 1999, LI-COR announced a business agreement with NEN Life Science Products, Inc., of Boston, MA, making LI-COR NEN’s exclusive contract manufacturer of the NEN Global IR2 DNA sequencing instrument system and exclusive world-wide distributor for the DNA sequencing instruments and DNA sequencing terminator reagents.

The 4300 DNA Analysis System was introduced in 2003. This third generation instrument provided an updating of the IR2 System by incorporating newer technology for the laser and microscope assembly for enhanced sensitivity. An internal server was added to enhance both stand alone and network operation. The 4300 System now includes comprehensive application packages for DNA sequencing, Microsatellite analysis, AFLP? analysis, reverse genetics (Tilling?), and SNP discovery (Ecotilling).

In early 2001, LI-COR released the Odyssey? Infrared Imaging System. The new system offers superior imaging capabilities with wide dynamic range and high sensitivity, enhancing the ability to detect and quantify strong and weak samples on the same blot.

Odyssey delivers superior 2-color Westerns with clear, sharp bands in a fraction of the time and cost of chemiluminescence, and features unprecedented direct detection for a variety of applications, including Western blots, In-Cell Westerns, and protein and DNA gels.

LI-COR applications scientists and engineers are actively involved in the research community, conducting seminars, participating in scientific meetings, and publishing work in leading journals.
